In Gen. 39:2, as we rejoin Joseph’s story after his brothers have sold him into slavery, we are told “the Lord was with Joseph.” In verse 3, his master Potiphar notices that “the Lord was with him.” At the end of the chapter, as Joseph has suffered another horrible setback, we are again told “the Lord was with Joseph” (v. 21). As in the beginning of the chapter, this statement is followed by Joseph’s new master (the jailer) recognizing that “the Lord was with him” (v. 23). Clearly, it is no accident
